I had forgotten that the Q word was used in the past (and in some places today) as a very derogatory, bigoted name-ing label. I think everyone, regardless of age or relationship status, have their own level of comfort regarding the list of words used to describe anything outside of heteronormativity. I don't think it's the responsibility of the LGBT community to declare which words are off limits (you know the little thing ed free speech). BUT, I do agree it's up to each individual to politely inform others when certain words feel uncomfortable or offensive. What good does it do to curse someone out, especially if he/she honestly did not know "lifestyle" could be offensive? Why not educate others so that all who read this, whether or not they post, learn to be aware of certain words and potential effects? I'm saying this as a master's level multicultural education graduate who had to face her own set of Bunker-type biases. And, I'm saying this as a lesbian who is in a same-sex relationship, lives in a very welcoming community, has a wide-variety of friends, and is constantly learning something new when it comes to the sensitivities of the LGBT community.
